Dr. Dog - We All Belong (Park The Van)
buy now cd buy now vinyl
It isn't often I fall for a band my own age, but when I do I fall hard. Such is
the case with Dr. Dog. They came into my life one hung-over Saturday
morning at Waterloo and have been
true ever since. With We All Belong Dr. Dog deliver what they do best
- catchy lo-fi pop tunes with sing-along choruses and tankard swinging tempos.
The LP sounds as though it was recorded one night after last
orders and the raw honesty of their songs brings long overdue soul to a market
over saturated with pretence and irony. Dr. Dog are not afraid to have fun and
put their heart on the line which is all I've ever wanted from a man, er I mean
band.

Giant Skyflower Band - Blood Of The Sunworm (Soft Absue)
buy now
New Recording from Glenn Donaldson of the Skygreen Leopards and co-conspirator
Shayde Sartin. Giant Skyflower Band craft the kind of late-night psychedelic
music that Syd Barrett could have made 35 years or so ago, but heavier on the
sitar. I would say this is the next best thing to a new Skygreen Leopards
record, but this may in fact be better!

Guided
By Voices - Live From Austin City Limits (New West)
buy now
If anyone would have told me 10 years ago that Guided By Voices would make
it on Austin City Limits I would have called them a liar! The fact that it is
has been put out on DVD and CD is truly
amazing to me!
Those of you that know GBV, know that a live GBV CD is going to be bearing
warts and all. I was at this taping and can assure you this was not your
average ACL show. Lots of beer was consumed
on the stage. This was a brilliantly sloppy performance. I wouldn't expect
anything else from them. At times Bob's voice seems a little off, but the whole
point is he is a vocal "Guide" for the rest of us to sing along to. I
mean we all know the songs right?

The
Hundred Dollar Band - Waves And Particles (Emperor Jones)
buy now
Alastair Galbraith is back! The Hundred Dollar Band is a group that consists of
Alastair, Mike Dooley (Toy Love) and Maxine Funke. This is mostly instrumental
with Alastair singing occasionally, most notably "Midnight Blue" an
old song of his on the Expressway Pile Up compilation.
The violin/cello/drum combo is soothing as well as slightly abrasive, with a
little bit of psychedelia thrown in. The recording is kinda raw but that only
makes me wish I was there! This is not
sit-down-and-read-your-latest-Tom-Clancy-book background music. This music
commands your attention. Beautiful stuff! Thank god for labels like Emperor
Jones putting out stuff like this.
