Let me start off by saying that I didn't get to go to ACL
Fest last year, damn it. So I missed Coldplay, Oasis, Wilco, Jet, Death Cab for
Cutie, Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand, Spoon, and more. I missed them all. But
after last year's oppressive heat here in Austin
(108 degrees on the 3rd day of ACL Fest last year) and the effects
of Hurricane Katrina on our city (the Convention Center housed some 4000
evacuees), I had some excuses for not going. Or maybe it was all the diapers my
wife and I had up to our necks. Or maybe I couldn't afford the tickets. I can
rack up a thousand excuses but the truth is I really wanted to go. There is
just something about tons of bands playing outdoors to huge crowds chugging
beer and singing along to their favorite songs. It's such a joyous kind of
thing to do for me.
So, let us fast forward to right now. Quirkee.com was
granted a media pass to ACL Fest 2006 and I'm covering the 2nd day,
Saturday September 16th. So why am I going only one day when there
are three? Because I'm still up to my neck in diapers and my wife would kill
me! No, honestly, I don't think my body could take it. What can I say? I'm
getting old and 72 hours of beer drinking would put me in the hospital. But
don't you fret dear readers. The other two days will be covered by Quirkee.com
staff, just not by me.
So in case you haven't checked out the lineup for day 2,
here are some highlights for me: I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness, Charlie
Sexton, Nada Surf, Kings of Leon, The Secret Machines, Aimee Mann, Galactic,
Los Lobos, Willie Nelson, The Raconteurs, and most of all, Massive Attack. Oh,
Massive Attack, how I love thee. Seriously, these guys are... how can I state
this as eloquently as possible? I friggin' love their music! Their album Mezzanine,
to me, is one of the best albums in my collection. The song Angel has got to be
one of the coolest songs I've ever heard and it still gives me goose bumps when
I listen to it. And the rest of the album is strong from beginning to end. And the 100th Window CD is great too though quite different than Mezzanine.
And their earlier albums are classics in the trip hop genre. What more can I
say?
I recently did an interview with Mike Patton, singer of the
band Faith No More and the leader of his current project, Peeping Tom. Massive
Attack did a track with Mike for Peeping Tom, a banger called Kill the DJ. What
a song! I'm hoping, if all the planets align and the rock gods smile down on
me, to interview Massive Attack. We'll see. Maybe my interview with Mike Patton
would be a nice lead-in for interviewing Massive Attack since they worked
together. Is it possible? Sure. But who knows.
But I do know this. I'm going to ACL Fest this year. I will
be there, interviewing bands, telling people about Quirkee.com, chugging beer,
and singing along to my favorite songs. It will be such a joyous kind of thing
for me. You'll see.
Watch out for more coverage of ACL Fest 2006 on Quirkee.com
