Image Man, I used to be a rocker. The stereo was always on a station with loud guitar riffs, heavy drums, lyrics that you can’t really understand until you read the CD jacket, earsplitting rock ‘n roll music. I still like to rock out, but I just don’t seem to be able to fit it into my schedule as often. I can’t crank up Tool while driving to work since I work at home. I can’t crank up Tool in the morning because the baby is sleeping. I can’t really crank up Tool while the baby is awake, either. Have you ever seen a baby’s face when Maynard starts singing?

(With a worried look on her face) “Daddy? Why is that little box yelling at me? Is someone going to come crashing through the wall?” I wouldn’t want to scar her for life, so I usually wait until I’m alone in the truck on the way to the store or post office before I challenge my stereo speakers to a duel. They are factory speakers but can definitely hold their own.

When I was reading through some blogs the other day, I came across a link that will change life forever... Baby Rock Records. They have Tool! Life is good. Now the baby and I can bang our heads, sippy cups, or hands on the steering wheel to Lullaby Renditions of Tool played by a mellotron, glockenspiel, and chimes instead of guitar and drums!

I owe it to my parents for teaching me about music. They have been involved in music their wholes lives. My mother plays piano. They both sing in the church choir and other various musical groups. I even sang in the choir at school and church.

Stop laughing.

Get up off the floor.

Are you done, yet?

So what I was saying is, I’m glad my parents instilled music into my life at a very young age. We did spend time practicing choir stuff, but I still had many opportunities to jam to their now classic rock albums in my room. I still have most of those albums. It’s good to be able to look back and know that your parents were rockers, too. I would listen to the Beatles, The Eagles, Janis Joplin, Pink Floyd, and others. I even listened to Simon and Garfunkel over and over again. It must be the choirboy in me.

Really, do you have to laugh again?

When I was a kid, one of my favorite things to do was make mix tapes. American Top 40 would come on and I would record the songs and pause during the commercials, then remix and dub the songs in the order I wanted on another tape. That’s the way we downloaded music back in the 80’s. We dubbed it from tape to tape and shared it with our friends without ever worrying that the record companies were going to knock on our door and sue our parents. Oh, the good old days when you didn’t have to worry about getting grounded because some fancy high-paid lawyers want to take your parents to the cleaners over some little music copyright infringement violation. “Sorry, Johnny. You shouldn’t have downloaded that Britney Spears song on your daddy’s hard drive. The video was better, anyway. See you in court!”

Do you remember the first album you ever purchased with your allowance money? I do, but I’m not going to tell you because you’ll just laugh again. It was 1984 and I was twelve years old. Okay I’ll tell, but I’m jeopardizing my rocker status.

Lionel Ritchie- Can’t Slow Down.

Ha ha, laugh it up! I jammed All Night Long because I was Stuck On You…Penny Lover. I also purchased the Footloose Soundtrack album at the same time. Can I get some of my rocker status back now? Sammy Hagar performed on that album and he is a rocker! We all have things in our past that are a little embarrassing. The sad thing is... I still own those albums. Someday my kids will be listening to them like I did with my parent’s albums. That is if they can ever find a record player.

Bring The Noise.
Fisrt record bought out of my own pocket was The Human League - Don't You Want Me Baby. It was a 45. My Dad was into music, my mom not so much. My Dad would play Jethro Tull, Yes, Springsteen, Simon & Garfunkel....He's always stayed up with music. I sent him Radiohead's In Rainbows via iTunes for his Birthday this year. I have one absolutely moronic music related story. I passed up seeing U2, with Public Enemy & Bjork opening over a halloween weekend, to hang out with a girl. who dumped me,........that weekend. I'm never going to let myself live that one down.
