ImageWhen it comes to professional sports everyone in Texas should be thankful that the San Antonio Spurs are here to represent our great state.  Out of the seven teams that currently reside in Texas; the Spurs seem to be the only ones that have their shit together.  Dallas is all glitz and glamour with no substance, Houston is ripe with losers, except for the Rockets, who couldn’t stay healthy to save their lives, which leaves the San Antonio as the only city in Texas that has hoisted a championship trophy in the last decade.  In a state that breeds talented athletes like Jack Rabbits on ecstasy, you would think that we’d have better professional sports teams, but alas poor coaching, cheap owners and plain old bad luck have kept the state of Texas out of the winners circle everywhere except for San Anotonio!  So how do we fix this problem?  Well I have a few ideas.

Texas and football go hand in hand like chicken fried steak and white gravy unfortunately the last decade of football has brought nothing but misery to the Lone Star State.   The Cowboys haven’t won a playoff game in 13 years and the Texans not only have never made the playoffs, but upon inception into the league, they couldn’t even come up with an original mascot.  It’s pathetic, in a state where everyone lives and breathes football; the Texas teams can’t even make the freaking playoffs!  So how do they change that?

Houston needs to keep building its defense and find some way to keep their quarterbacks off their back on their feet. Dallas on the other hand needs to dig down deep and show some heart.  They have the talent, but it has YET to be seen as to whether they have the desire to make a run at a championship.

Outlook:  Not good, both teams have a shot to make the playoffs, but they’ll both need solid years from suspect quarterbacks to get them there.

Team most likely to break through and win a championship:  Gotta be the Cowboys,  they have better overall talent and a better front office, unfortunately I think that Jerry Jones sold his soul to the devil to win the Super Bowl in ’95.

In a state where so many talented baseball players have been produced you would think that there would be at least one decent baseball team, but alas Texas has none.  Don’t get me wrong the Rangers are currently leading the AL West, but in a league where bottomless pockets rule it’s only a matter of time before the Yankees or the Red Sox swallow them whole.  The Astros had their shot in 2005, but came up empty, real empty as they were swept by the Chicago White sox in 4 games and haven’t made the playoffs since.  So how do they change that?

Houston needs to blow things up and get younger while developing their farm system and hope…well just hope.  Texas needs a frontline pitcher and for Josh Hamilton to stay off the DL, but with a broke owner getting the needed help  just doesn’t seem very likely.

Outlook:  Like Lloyd Christmas in Dumber and Dumber, the Rangers have a one in a million chance of holding off the Angels and winning the AL West, but from there the odds only get worse when the Yanks and Red Sox come into the picture.

Team most likely to break through and win a championship:  Texas Rangers, they have a stocked farm system, a loaded lineup when healthy and if someone with deep pockets ends up buying the team then the Rangers could finally break through and erase the memory of George W. Bush.

Basketball has never been the most popular sport in Texas, but it’s the only sport that has actually boasted a world champion in this freaking decade!  The Houston Rockets seemed to be on the verge of taking it to that next level but every year it seems like injuries kill them in the end.  Still it could be worse for the Rockets, they could be the Dallas Mavericks, A team that was never taken seriously until they made the Finals in 2006.  Unfortunately they ran into Dwayne Wade and some SORRY officiating and the Heat took them out in Six.  Which brings us to the Spurs; the only team to bring home the bacon in this decade, San Antonio is the epitome of how a team should be run.  Over the past 10 years San Antonio has combined smart coaching, brilliant front office management and unselfish players to bring home three championships! So how do we fix the other two teams?

Dallas is too old and just not talented enough to contend with the big dogs.  It’s time to blow things up and start over. Houston has the talent, but for the love of Heysoose they just need to stay healthy!

Outlook:  Look for all three teams to make it to the playoffs next year with the Spurs hoisting the Trophy in June!

It’s only been 2 years since a Texas team has hoisted a championship trophy, but I think that it’s high time that the rest of the teams in Texas stood up and took notice of how the Spurs handle their business.  Stop crumbling in crunch time, Dallas, stay off the injury list, Houston,  and just knuckle up and perform like San Antonio has time and time again or Texas fans might just be looking at another decade of misery!
