ImageThere’s a storm brewing in the Metroplex and I’m not talking about the Microburst that destroyed the Cowboys practice facility.  Back in the Cowboys heyday it was said that the reason why there was a hole in the roof of Texas Stadium was so that “God could watch his favorite team play on Sundays.”  If that is true then maybe the destruction of the practice facility was the Big Guys way of letting the Cowboys know that he expects more from them.  It’s been 13 years since the Cowboys have won a playoff game and with a less than stellar draft and the team facing a tough schedule, Jerry Jones would be smart to keep a look out for lightning bolts from the skies.

13 years without even a hint of post season success tends to bring out the worst in even the most die hard fans and this year doesn’t look like anything will change.  It sucks because just two years ago the sun was shining on Dallas with a 13-3 record and a home playoff game against a Giants team that they had already defeated twice, but it only took one quarter (the fourth) for the Cowboys to fold like Ricky Hatton.  The next year there were no playoffs and the only thing the fans had to look forward too was this years draft.  It was a weak draft, but come on when Jerry Jones is calling the shots Dallas always seemed to swing a deal that landed a big time player.  Not this year, after trading their 1st round pick to the Lions in the Roy Williams deal, the Cowboys proceeded to trade away their second round (their only pick on the first day of the draft) for another 3rd and 4th round pick.  Now, I understand that the plan in this years draft was to get younger at the bottom of the roster and to make room to sign bad ass DeMarcus Ware, but by doing so it seems as if Jones just might’ve sacrificed any chance the Cowboys had of bagging that ever elusive playoff victory.

What’s worse is that while cutting Terrell Owens and shoring up the bottom of the roster helps, this is still basically the same team that went 9-7 and failed to make the playoffs last year, only this year they’ll be facing a tougher schedule.  With six games against a much improved NFC East the Cowboys will also have to face the AFC West and the NFC South.  Throw in a road game at Lambeau field and another vicious December and the Cowboys chances of making the playoffs looks about as good as the Republicans chances of unseating Barack Obama with Sarah Palin.

The outlook for next season isn’t good and while the skies look dark, maybe, just maybe this is the kind of backs against the wall season team needs to unite them and get that old swagger back.  If it doesn’t and the wheels come off the band wagon early in the season then even this sunny side up Cowboys fan has to admit that he saw it coming.
