I was working on this column about the Cowboys current state of events after they blew the Pittsburgh game and were bickering like the cast of "I Love New York" but just never got around to posting it.  Well needless to say that after beating the hell out of the Giants Sunday night things have changed for the Cowboys.  I'm still not sold on them making the playoffs and liked some of the jokes in the column so I'm posting it as a blog.  So here you go.

I’ll admit it.  I am a die hard Cowboys fan and that there hasn’t been a year where I didn’t think that they had at least an outside chance of winning the Super Bowl.  However, even I have to admit that it doesn’t look good for the Cowboys right now.  For a team that is as deep and talented as the Cowboys are, the truth is that they just don’t have the chemistry, the discipline and frankly the health to win their final three games and get into the playoffs.  What makes their task even more monumental is the fact that while Wade Phillips is a nice guy, he’s just not the right coach for this team.  This team doesn’t need a players coach, it needs someone who will instill discipline and keep the team in order, while letting Jason Garrett and the offense do their thing.  What they need is Bill Parcells, but not the washed up coach with d cups that grimaced his way through four seasons, they need the Bill Parcells circa 1996 that led a pass-happy Patriots team all the way to the Super Bowl.             If you were to compare a football team to a car's engine, then chemistry would be the oil that keeps everything running smooth and that’s just what Dallas has been lacking all season.  Just look at the facts, Roy Williams is a great receiver, but he just hasn’t had the time to get comfortable in the offense.  Pacman Jones has been a non-factor in the seven games he’s played in, but has been nothing but a distraction in the games he missed.  T.O. is a great player, but his temperament is so fragile that he’s like a wet stick of dynamite that everyone’s afraid to handle.  The most disappointing player of them all though is Tony Romo, who even though he has played well, still hasn’t stepped up to be the leader that the team desperately needs him to be.  No other professional sport relies on team chemistry as much as football and anyone who doubts that fact needs only to take one look at this undisciplined group of underachieving superstars for proof.  For chrissakes the cast of VH1's "I Love New York" had more chemistry than the Cowboys had this year and will probably even have a happier ending to boot.             I like Wade Phillips and would love nothing more than to see a good ole’ boy from Texas lead the Cowboys to another Super Bowl, but we’ll see another Bush back in office before we'll ever see that happen.  Phillips is like jovial middle manager that wants to be friends with his staff instead of disciplining them and risking the chance of being unpopular.  And while that kind of coaching may fly in Denver and Buffalo it most certainly won’t fly in Dallas.  Tom Landry would be spinning in his grave like a row of foosball players if he could see this undisciplined team of overpaid superstars.  Never in the Cowboys history has less been done with a team that was so talented.  Hell, even Barry Switzer managed to win a Super Bowl with Jimmy Johnson’s leftovers and Wade Phillips can’t even manage to win a playoff game.  Fans only hope is that Jerry Jones will come to his senses after this season and finally go out and hire a leader to coach the Cowboys instead of this never ending line of "Yes" men.             It’s bad enough that the Cowboys are suffering from chemistry and leadership problems, but this year they have suffered more injuries than the cast of Jackass.  Tony Romo missed three games; Terence Newman’s missed five, while Felix Jones, Matt McBriar, Sam Hurd and Roy Williams are all out for the season and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.    The Cowboys have had so many injuries this year that sometimes I think Jerry Jones sold his soul to the devil for three Super Bowls in the 90's and the Devil has come to collect his due.  How else can you explain why the Cowboys haven’t won a playoff game in 13 years, Quincy Carter and Jerry Jones wicked face lift?  This team doesn’t need a new coach, what it needs is an exorcism!             The news isn’t good, the remaining schedule is even worse and the team is bickering backstage like the cast of Grey's Anatomy.  It wouldn’t be a surprise to ESPN or the Cowboys fans if the team just rolled over and played dead, but as corny as it may sound the Boys may still have a run in them.  I know, I know I was leading the doom patrol for three paragraphs, but a win against the Giants could go a long way to curing what ails this team.  A win on Sunday night would install confidence and would keep the Cowboys in the lead for that last remaining playoff spot.  I mean they say that a wounded animal is most dangerous when cornered and Cowboys fans had better hope that is true, because if it’s not then it might just be time to put this team out of it’s misery.
