ImageLambs to the slaughter.  What has become of a nation founded by people who were so fed up with the way things were that they fought, literally fought for change?  There was a time when people screamed, "ENOUGH!"  We once believed in a right to speak out, to expose injustices, to enact changes, and fight for what we felt just and true.  Today we are mocked, scorned and dismissed.  Why?  What happened to our voices and what could possibly have enough power to silence them?

Time.  Time has eroded our resolve much like the constant winds and water have eroded a tiny crack in the Arizona desert to form The Grand Canyon.  It didn't happen overnight.  It was the result, year after year, of the pounding forces of wind, water, ice and heat.  Oh I'm sure the rocks resisted initially using all of their collective resolve to keep the faith and stay strong.  But the winds were constant and unrelenting.  As the crack grew, strongholds were lessened and eventually gave way altogether.

Our resolve has likewise been weakened.  Year after year our resolve has been pounded.  We watch, helplessly, as businesses close their doors never to be reopened.  We watch, helplessly,  as jobs are outsourced to places beyond our borders.  We watch, helplessly,  as services that once were available to families in need are no longer.  We watch, helplessly,  as the costs of everyday items rise steadily, exponentially, while our resources remain fixed or even lowered.  We watch, helplessly,  as the cost of fuel skyrockets.  We watch, helplessly,  as those that provide that fuel get wealthy beyond imagination.   We watch, helplessly, as our children are are deployed and lost forever in foreign lands.  We watch, helplessly....
I'd like to offer, though, that it's not over.  The defeatist attitude we've adopted need not continue.  It should not continue.  We still have our voices and though singularly they may be timid, quiet, or weak--collectively those voices are powerful.  As powerful as the winds that carved a canyon.

In a little less than two months we shall have the opportunity to use our voices.  Each one of us will be given the opportunity to speak.  Think carefully about what you want to say.  Reflect, study, prepare.  Speak wisely.

“Nothing that I can do will change the structure of the universe. But maybe, by raising my voice I can help the greatest of all causes - goodwill among men and peace on earth.”  Albert Einstein.

Quirkee Knowledge (TM)

Originally, Homer Simpson's ear was shaped like a G, and the hair above in the shape of an M, spelling Groening's initials. This was later discontinued. Groening includes the initials when drawing autographed pictures of Homer for fans.
