drinking_wine.jpgThere's more to serving wine than just pouring it into a glass. With the holidays coming up, wine will be flowing like a fruity, boozy river through the enchanted drunken forest. Uh... whatever. Follow these rules and you'll impress your family, friends, and dinner guests this Christmas with your wine serving skills:

  1. Chill white or blush wines in the refrigerator 1-2 hours before serving, to about 55°F. Red wines should be chilled about 30-45 minutes in the refrigerator before serving, to about 62-65°F.
  2. Blush & white wines go well with fish, poultry, and light meals. Red wines go well with red meats and hearty meals.
  3. Check the cork for signs of deterioration or oxidation. If in good shape, smell the cork for aromas and flavors.
  4. Examine the wine's tint and hues. Darker hues denote a mature wine.

Things Not to Do While Serving Wine

  1. Take a swig straight from the bottle.
  2. Stick the cork up your nose.
  3. Drink the entire bottle of wine, unless someone else does first.
  4. Drink your wine with a straw.
  5. Serve the bottle of wine in the brown paper sack from the convenience store where you purchased it.
  6. Take the plastic bag out of the wine box, twist it above your head, and wring the last few drops of wine into your mouth.
  7. Pretend the screw-top bottle of $2.99 apple wine is an expensive, private-reserve brand.
