Edison is considered one of the most prolific inventors in history, holding 1,097 U.S. patents in his name. Here are some of his well-known inventions that changed the world:

  • thomas_edison.jpgPhonograph - 1877 - Precursor to the record player
  • Carbon Microphone - 1878 - Used in telephones up to the 1980s
  • Carbon filament - 1879 - First reliable light bulb material

Edison, in spite of his successes, also had many failures. Here are some of his misunderstood inventions:

  • Parasitic Alien Detector - 1882 - Attempted to create a device that would detect aliens that were living inside humans. Scrapped when negative results were found on all of Edison's case studies except for Nikola Tesla, who tested positive 200 times.
  • God Telephone - 1885 - Edison's attempts to call God were scrapped when he received a busy signal on every call. Crank calls from the Devil sealed this doomed experiment's fate.
  • Poop Matter Transporter - 1886 - Bathroom breaks cut into Edison's productivity. This device was attached to his rear end and was meant to transport his feces to the toilet. Instead, the poop appeared in the employee break room, severely straining the already tenuous relationship with his staff.

Originally, Homer Simpson's ear was shaped like a G, and the hair above in the shape of an M, spelling Groening's initials. This was later discontinued. Groening includes the initials when drawing autographed pictures of Homer for fans.
