sahara_smith_thumbnail.jpgA native Austinite, Sahara Smith moved out to Wimberely, TX, as a child where she started playing music at age fourteen. At age fifteen she won a nationwide contest to perform on Garrison Keillor's "A Prairie Home Companion" to be part of "Talent from 12 to 20" contest where she came in second place on the show. She has since moved back to Austin and is making everybody take notice!

Check out Sahara Smith at ACL Fest 2007 on the BMI stage at 11:15am - 11:45am, Friday, September 14th, 2007.

1. What are you looking forward to most about being at ACL Fest?

Being at the ACL Fest. I remember going to the first ACL for my fourteenth birthday. I was sitting on a blanket with my two best friends, listening to Patty Griffin, and one of them leaned over and whispered, "That's going to be you someday." And I thought, no way. Not a chance. But wouldn't that be incredible?

2. Last year, it was 102 degrees on the Saturday of the festival and Sunday saw a torrential downpour. How do you prepare for playing outdoors?

Sombrero.

3. If you had some time of your own at ACL Fest, which other band would you most like to see?

Bob Dylan, without a doubt.

4. People will surely be blogging about performances as soon as they are over. Last year, an air-conditioned tent was setup with computers inside. The Internet has contributed to the success of many bands in recent years. How has it helped your band? If the Internet did not play a role in your success, what factors pushed you to the top?

The internet has definitely contributed to my career. I was on 'A Prairie Home Companion' a few years ago, after which a listener formed a yahoo group for me in order to enable people to track my progress. A few months ago, I formed a Myspace page, which has allowed me to connect with artists and fans from all over the world.

5. If you were not playing music, what most likely would you be doing for a career?

I'm not sure. I would probably be working as a fry cook, wondering why I decided to get a degree in etymology.

6. What instruments do you not know how to play but wish you did?

I would love to play the cello and the accordion.

7. Do you have a philosophy to live by?

Give joy wherever possible. And always bring a sweater.
