ImageOur son had his third birthday a few weeks ago and I got so many great new toys! Umm…I mean HE got so many great new toys! He got classic games like Chutes & Ladders, Candyland, and Hi-Ho Cherry-O, a Thunderbirds Jet Kite, and a whole lot of golf stuff. It was a golf themed birthday party because he is infatuated with the game and plays every day. I put a cup and flag in the front yard so I…I mean HE can practice his pitching and chipping. We also got him a new driver and putter that were more his size (not my size!) than the other clubs he has been playing with.

One cool toy that I played with the most on my… I mean HIS birthday was a giant Monster golf club and ball. It is a little heavy right now for our son, but is a good weight for me to hit across the street at our neighbor’s truck. It’s a little game we started with regular practice balls and clubs where we try to hit into the bed of each other’s truck. We live on a wide cove so there is not much traffic to worry about. It is the perfect distance for a 9 iron with a plastic golf ball!

At a friend’s house the other day we got to play Monster tennis. That will have to be part of the Cove Olympic Games my neighbor and I are working on. So far we have ping-pong, horse (basketball), one-handed horse (beer in the other hand), the golf ball in the back of the truck game, horseshoes, and now Monster tennis! We need about five more games to make the Cove Olympics last a full weekend. Any suggestions?

Now back to the reason for this article. The things I love most about having kids is eating Play-doh again, shoving crayons up my nose, and playing with toys! There are so many more kinds of toys these days than when I was a kid. Let’s hear it for China and Thailand! The workers who make them don’t get paid much, but they sure can crank out some toys!

One of my favorites is the Hot Wheels Monster Truck collection. I like toys with the name “Monster” in them. I think there at least 25 trucks in the series. We’ve been collecting them for a while and are buying them for our son (bribing him) when he goes #2 on the potty. Seeing as I’m ready to stop buying diapers for him and wiping his butt with a dozen wipes every time he poops, I think the $2.99 monster trucks are worth every penny. We only have about ten more to go in the collection. That is the price of a month’s worth of Pampers Cruisers! It seems like a great deal to me, especially since we would be purchasing the rest of those trucks anyway. You know I can’t stop myself from getting all of them for me…I mean HIM to play with!

My mother said she bribed me with candy to use the potty. We try negotiating the candy/dessert deal if he eats his veggies at dinner and his reply is always, “I’m done. No dessert.” He then excuses himself from the table to go play. Well, I shouldn’t say he “excuses” himself. He’s more like a bolt of lightning from the chair to the closest toy. The boy hates veggies. I would be more concerned, but I survived on PB&J alone for at least a decade when I was a kid and I’m healthy. Somewhat healthy, anyway. Okay, so I have no idea what my current state of health really is. I feel good! I guess I should go in for a checkup. I wish I could go to our children’s pediatrician. He gives out stickers.

I am itching to go out to the park to test fly his new 48” Wingspan 3-D Ripstop Nylon Thunderbirds Jet Kite with Sky Streamers that comes with a Super Easy QuikWinder Handle and Safety Brake! It sounds like we might need helmets for this activity. The box says, “Ages 8 to Adult”. Hmm…well since he’s only 3, I guess THAT’S MY TOY! Maybe I’ll let him hold the handle. Just for a second or two, though. I don’t want him to let go of my new kite and watch it fly away to wherever it is that balloons and kites end up when somebody lets go of them.

The box also says, “Made in China”. Thank you, China. And thank you, Aunt Amanda.
